Man United legend confident that Greenwood will score loads of goals

Mason Greenwood enjoyed a brilliant breakthrough season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The 18-year-old bagged 17 goals and five assists in all competitions this past season establishing himself as a first-team regular.

The teenager took the league by storm with scintillating performances week in week out and have won admirers even outside the club.

United legend Rio Ferdinand believes that Greenwood has all the quality to become a top striker. Speaking to The Sun, Ferdinand revealed how impressed he’s with Greenwood.

“Mason is a cold-hearted killer, a great finisher.

“Just look at his videos and watch him from when he was a kid — he’s not doing anything different now.

“He’s just doing it on a different pitch and in a bigger stadium, with more people watching. He’s got all the same habits.” said Ferdinand.

He also predicted that the young striker would score plenty.

“He’s a natural goalscorer who is going to score loads and loads of goals.”

Ferdinand backs Greenwood to follow the path of two former United strikers Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen who both made it to the England squad as teenagers. Ferdinand also believes that the delay in Euro 2020 due to COVID-19 could be hugely beneficial for the teenager.

“Could the Euros being delayed by a year actually work out for Mason? Probably, yeah.

“But the great players, when they’re ready, they’re ready. You don’t care about their age.

“Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney are two great examples.

“Owen burst on to the scene at the 1998 World Cup and Mason could do the same, given the chance.

“I love him. He’s a great talent and what I also love about him is his demeanor, his character,” he explained.

Moreover, Ferdinand has no doubt in Greenwood’s abilities and lauded his character on and off the pitch.

“No matter the stage, same face, same expression, same way he carries himself.

“He knows he’s good enough. ‘Just give me the ball and I’ll do it’.

“He ain’t got all that stuff going on off the pitch. There are no airs and graces about him. There isn’t anything else he’s worried about.

“He’s just worried about how good he can be as a footballer. Which is what I really love.”

Earlier today, Greenwood was handed his first call-up from England men’s football team’s boss Gareth Southgate in the Nations League games against Iceland and Denmark.

It is evident that what we have seen from Greenwood is just a glimpse and there is much more to come. This is, certainly, just a start for the young man.
