Manchester United have ended their search for a director of football, a report from The Athletic claims.
Over the past couple of years, the Red Devils have been linked with a number of names for the position, with the hierarchy wanting someone, who can enhance their chances of signing their transfer targets.
However, the club have not come close to appointing anyone since the time under ex-boss Jose Mourinho and The Athletic reports that the plans have been shelved.
United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and chief negotiator Matt Judge have been primarily responsible for negotiating the transfer fees and personal terms for potential new signings.
Still, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had an important role to play with the direct line of contact with Woodward and so far, the transfer choices of the Norwegian have been perfect.
As a result, United appear to have ended their pursuit of a sporting director, who would have proved an unnecessary interference between the head coach and Woodward.
Under Solskjaer, United have recruited five players in Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Daniel James, Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes and Odion Ighalo (on loan) and each of them have made their mark.
The results on the playing field have not been consistent this term but there is plenty of promise going forward. The board will need to support the Norwegian’s plans for the next transfer window.
