Man United could be making a familiar mistake by signing Moise Kean

Manchester United are poised to sign a new striker this summer to strengthen their attack.

England youth international Liam Delap was their first-choice target, but the 22-year-old decided to join Chelsea.

United have now been linked with Italian striker Moise Kean. He was in brilliant form for Fiorentina last season, scoring 25 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions.

The Manchester outfit have watched the Italy international and are considering paying his €52 million (£43.68m) release clause.

They may have to do a lot to convince Kean to move to Old Trafford, as he reportedly wants to play in the Champions League next season.

Kean has Premier League experience, having joined Everton from Juventus in 2019.

He could not impress with the Merseyside outfit, scoring four goals in 39 games before he left the club.

The Italian also struggled on loan at Paris Saint-Germain and in his second stint at Juventus before his breakthrough with Fiorentina last season.

He was the second-highest goalscorer in the Italian top flight, led the division for most expected goals, and was third for most goal involvements.

Despite his heroics with Fiorentina, United should not sanction a move for him as they could be repeating a familiar mistake if they did so.

Kean has had one great season in his career, and the pressure of playing for a club with United’s pedigree could overwhelm him.

Man United also bought Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee after their breakthrough season in the Serie A, but the duo have struggled in the Premier League.

Kean’s poor hold-up play, which could be further exposed in England, is another reason United should not snap him up.

Last season, he was dispossessed 1.76 times per 90 in the league. By contrast, Hojlund was dispossessed 1.48 times in the English top flight.

The former Juventus young star passes poorly, as he ranked in the 38th percentile for passes completed per 90 in the league last term.

Kean also does not create many chances for his team-mates, having ranked in the 17th percentile for chances created last season in the Italian top flight.

United need an all-round and experienced striker, so sanctioning a move for Kean would be wrong.
