Man United confirm the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers (via the club’s official website).

The Brazil international has signed a deal that keeps him at United until June 2030, with the club having the option to extend it for another year.

United had initially announced early this month that they had reached an agreement with Wolves to sign the Brazilian.

The Red Devils activated Cunha’s £62.5 million release clause to secure his signing, making him the most expensive acquisition of the INEOS era.

United have shown their intent to strengthen their attacking options this summer.

They quickly identified Cunha as a target due to his ability to play as a number 10 in manager Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 set-up.

The Brazilian was in superb form for Wolves last season, scoring 17 goals and registering six assists in 36 appearances across all competitions.

Cunha has revealed that he had always ‘dreamed of wearing the red shirt’ and had supported the club since childhood.

He said: “It is hard to put into words my feelings about becoming a Manchester United player. Ever since I was a child in Brazil watching Premier League games on TV at my grandmother’s house, United was my favourite English team and I dreamed of wearing the red shirt. I want to thank my family and everyone who has helped me make that dream a reality.

“I can’t wait for the start of pre-season to get to know my team-mates and prepare for the season ahead. All my focus is now on working hard to become a valuable part of the team, and helping get this club back to the top.”

Director of football Jason Wilcox revealed that the club signed him because he ‘has proved his ability to succeed in the Premier League.’

Cunha is expected to be a regular for United next season, playing as one of the two number 10s, with Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo likely to be the other.

United are working on a deal to seal the move for the Cameroon international.

Despite Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in the Bees star, journalist Ben Jacobs claims United are in pole position to sign him and should be able to complete a deal.
