Man United confirm Leny Yoro undergoes surgery, out for three months

Manchester United have provided an injury update on new centre-back Leny Yoro.

The defender sustained a metatarsal injury in United’s pre-season game against Arsenal last month.

After being taken off early in the first half, he was spotted afterwards on crutches wearing a protective boot.

Man United have confirmed that Yoro will be out for the next three months.

The statement read: “Manchester United defender Leny Yoro has today had a successful surgery on his foot injury.

“Yoro’s rehabilitation starts now and we look forward to the 18-year-old returning to fitness in around three months.”

Surgery will delay Yoro’s return

The Athletic reported that the youngster could take longer to return to the pitch after undergoing the operation.

It is a massive setback for United and Erik ten Hag after a hefty outlay on him this summer.

Yoro’s contract with his former club had just a year remaining, and the Red Devils were determined to secure his signature this summer.

The youngster was set to step into the significant void left by star defender Raphael Varane.

However, it looks like fans will have to wait until autumn for his competitive debut with United.

They must act swiftly to sign another quality centre-back to bolster their defence.

They are keen on Bayern Munich star Matthijs de Ligt but have yet to agree a fee.

The Bundesliga giant could take advantage of United’s misery and demand a higher fee for letting De Ligt leave.

United had a joint bid for De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui rejected last week.

Ten Hag has four other options for the two centre-back spots – Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans.

Martinez is the only centre-back who perfectly fits the Dutchman’s philosophy. However, the 26-year-old has struggled to remain fit over the last 12 months.

United must accelerate their transfer plans and address the issues in defence.
