Manchester United have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp, making him the club’s final signing of the summer transfer window.
United reached an agreement with Antwerp to sign the Belgian for £18.2 million plus add-ons earlier today after agreeing to personal terms on a five-year deal with him. He becomes the first-ever Belgian goalkeeper to be signed by the club.
Aston Villa also attempted to sign the Club Brugge academy product as a replacement for Emiliano Martinez, but he preferred a move to Man United.
Lammens began his career at Club Brugge, where he made his professional debut, replacing Simon Mignolet for their Belgian Super Cup win over Genk in 2021.
He joined Antwerp as a free agent in the summer of 2023 but first served as an understudy to Jean Butez, whom he eventually replaced as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper last season.
Lammens’ breakthrough came last term, making 173 saves in the Belgian Pro-League, 20 more than any other goalkeeper in the top 10 leagues in Europe ,according to OptaJoe.
The Belgian is expected to compete with Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir for a place in the starting line-up.
Bayindir has been the first choice this season, but has struggled to impress, and Onana played poorly in the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town last week.
Lammens will be in contention for Man United’s Premier League clash with Manchester City after the international break, but it remains to be seen whether he will be handed his debut by manager Ruben Amorim in the fixture.
Man United picked up their first victory of the campaign with a last-gasp 3-2 win over Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday and will look to build on that momentum after the international break.
