Manchester United have identified several midfield targets as they prepare for another crucial summer rebuild.
West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes is understood to be one of the standout names highly admired by both the United data department and Carrick himself.
According to The Times, the Red Devils are hopeful of signing Fernandes for about £40 million.
However, the Hammers have slapped a staggering £80m price tag on the Portugal international.
Arsenal are also pushing strongly for Fernandes as manager Mikel Arteta looks to add greater quality and competition to his midfield options.
Man United must force the price down
Fernandes has enjoyed a bright season at West Ham, despite their relegation to the EFL Championship.
The 21-year-old made 35 starts, scoring three goals and providing four assists.
The London outfit enjoyed an upturn in form in 2026, with much of the credit going to the stability provided by Fernandes in central midfield.
Fernandes excels at shielding the defence while also progressing play through intelligent forward passing from deeper positions.
Despite his relatively slight frame, United should not hesitate to pursue the youngster because he possesses the technical profile to develop into a midfielder similar to Paris Saint-Germain star Vitinha.
West Ham would ideally want to make a huge profit after paying Southampton £38 million to sign Fernandes only last summer.
However, United must remain disciplined and aim to negotiate the fee closer to the £50m mark.
The Hammers are reportedly under serious financial pressure following relegation and may need to generate around £150m through player sales.
Under those circumstances, rejecting a strong offer from Man United could become extremely difficult.
INEOS now need to move quickly because Arsenal are capable of launching a major bid and hijacking the transfer race at any moment.
