Manchester United have finally broken their silence on the allegations made against Brazilian winger Antony.
The 23-year-old has been accused of domestic abuse and physical assault by his ex-girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin, and is subject to police investigation and inquiries.
Since the allegations made the headlines, Antony has been dropped by the Brazilian national team pending the outcome of the inquisition.
The former Ajax forward was initially selected for the World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Peru but is now forced to watch from the sidelines with serious accusations hanging over his head.
Antony is alleged to have headbutted and punched his ex-girlfriend Cavallin in a hotel room on January 14, in the aftermath of a Premier League encounter against Manchester City.
She claims to have suffered a head injury and a damaged breast implant while alleging that Antony cut her finger with a glass and threatened to throw her out of a speeding car.
Antony, who was named in Man United’s Champions League squad for the 2023/24 campaign, has denied the allegations levelled against him, stating that he will cooperate with the police investigation.
Man United have also released a statement confirming that the club are aware of the allegations against the Brazil international but refrained from releasing any more information on the matter.
“Manchester United acknowledges the allegations made against Antony and notes that the police are conducting enquiries,” the club statement read.
“Pending further information, the club will be making no further comments.
“As a club, we are taking this matter seriously, with consideration of the impact of these allegations and subsequent reporting will have on survivors of abuse.”
Antony has already come under increased criticism from the Man United supporters and manager Erik ten Hag for his below-par performances on the pitch.
He will likely be dropped from the squad if new information comes to light, which will prove a major concern for Ten Hag, who is already at odds with Antony’s potential replacement, Jadon Sancho.
Antony’s charges will come yet another major blow for the Red Devils, who are still reeling from the Mason Greenwood episode.
