United sold Chris Smalling to Roma and didn’t sign any new center-backs despite having a shaky defense. They were heavily linked to the likes of Dayot Upamecano and Kalidou Koulibaly but nothing worked out.
United shortlisted two defenders after the transfer window: Pau Torres and Jules Kounde. Both Kounde and Torres play in La Liga and have a decent reputation.
Unlike United, City did sign Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias in the summer. This gives an advantage for United as the Reds will have more game time to offer to Torres – if they wish to go ahead with the deal.

United are actively looking to sell Phil Jones – with recent news suggests United put a crazy price tag of £20m for the England international.
