Manchester United have received a major double injury boost ahead of a demanding month of club football.
The Red Devils secured a 2-1 victory over Lausanne-Sport in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Carrington today.
With several United players away on international duty, the INEOS ownership structure allowed the club to arrange a friendly against another side from the group.
Matthijs de Ligt and Carlos Baleba both started the game, marking an important step in their respective recoveries as United secured victory over the Swiss side.
Big boost for Michael Carrick
United head coach Michael Carrick will be delighted to see two important members of his squad back on the pitch.
De Ligt finally returned to action after almost a year on the sidelines, having last featured in November 2025 before a persistent back injury kept him out.
The Dutch defender underwent back surgery in May after suffering further setbacks during his recovery earlier this year.
Carrick could now choose to reintroduce him gradually, potentially using him as a substitute during United’s next few competitive fixtures.
Baleba completed a £65 million move from Brighton & Hove Albion to United this summer
The 22-year-old is yet to make his competitive debut for the club after suffering an ankle injury during pre-season before completing his transfer.
Baleba was included in United’s matchday squad for the trip to Craven Cottage to face Fulham but was ultimately left on the bench.
His return to full fitness represents another significant boost for Carrick, with Baleba capable of adding greater intensity and assurance to United’s midfield.
