“Major future”: Darren Fletcher dazzled by Man United wonderkid JJ Gabriel

Manchester United wonderkid JJ Gabriel has left supporters and coaches stunned with his extraordinary rise through the academy ranks this season.

JJ Gabriel was crowned the Premier League Under-18 Player of the Year yesterday.

The achievement feels even more remarkable considering the teenage sensation began the 2025-26 campaign as a 14-year-old competing against far older opponents.

Man United U18 head coach Darren Fletcher could not hide his admiration while discussing the rapid development of the academy star.

He said (via The Athletic): “JJ is an amazing talent and has an enthusiasm for football that he brings to the pitch every day: to learn, to want to play and be on the ball. He has been a pleasure to work with. He is a fantastic kid.

“We have to remember he is a kid and also, he is been part of a really good team. JJ has recognised the amount of help he’s had from team-mates to get on the ball into those positions to score goals. We have got a lot of good players. JJ has scored the goals, and goals always get the limelight.

“I have got a great relationship with him. He has a major future.”

JJ Gabriel could break into the first team next season

There is a real buzz around the rapid rise of Gabriel. Many expect him to receive opportunities during pre-season this summer.

He has produced astonishing numbers in Premier League U18 football, scoring 23 goals and providing three assists in just 23 league appearances.

Gabriel has also netted three goals in five FA Youth Cup matches ahead of tomorrow’s final against Manchester City.

This could be the biggest match of his young career, and another standout performance on such a stage would only increase the growing calls for his senior breakthrough.

United supporters will already be reminded of Kobbie Mainoo, who helped the club win the FA Youth Cup in 2022 before exploding into the first team shortly afterwards.

Few academy players in Europe currently possess the technical quality and fearlessness that Gabriel displays every week.

Inside Old Trafford, there is already a growing belief that the 15-year-old could become one of the defining talents of his entire generation if his development continues at this pace.
