Mainoo nominated for Premier League Young Player of the Season with Cherki and O’Reilly

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has been nominated for Premier League’s Young Player of the Year award.

West Ham United star Mateus Fernandes, and Bournemouth duo Alex Scott and Eli Junior Kroupi, who have all been linked with United are also on the shortlist.

Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly and Rayan Cherki, Brentford’s Michael Kayode and Newcastle United full-back Lewis Hall are the other nominees.

Mainoo is enjoying a brilliant run of form, having regained his place in the starting line-up under interim manager Michael Carrick.

Hailed as a ‘complete‘ player by Casemiro, the 21-year-old has made 26 top-flight appearances, chipping in with three goal involvements.

He scored the winning goal in the 3-2 victory over Liverpool, securing United’s Champions League qualification, further highlighting his impressive form.

Mainoo could become the first United player to win the award since Marcus Rashford, who claimed it in the 2015/16.

Cherki and O’Reilly are the leading candidates to win it, given their role in City’s quest to win the league title. The former has 16 league goal involvements, while the latter has eight.

Meanwhile, captain Bruno Fernandes is also on the shortlist for the Player of the Season award.

He faces competition from Antoine Semenyo, Erling Haaland, Gabriel, Declan Rice, David Raya, Igor Thiago, Morgan Gibbs-White.

Fernandes had earlier claimed the Football Writers’ Player of the Season award.

Likewise, Carrick is in the running for the Manager of the Season, alongside Pep Guardiola, Andoni Iraola, Mikel Arteta, Keith Andrews and Regis Le Bris.
