‘Magnificent’: Belgian media react to Senne Lammens’ fantastic performance vs Italy

Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens produced a brilliant performance during Belgium’s 2-0 win over Italy in their Nations League opener.

The Red Devils faced the Azzurri in Rome and produced a superb attacking display. Mika Godts and Dodi Lukebakio scored in the first and second half, respectively.

Italy shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma made several crucial saves for the hosts, but Lammens was equally good between the sticks for Mark van Bommel’s side.

The 24-year-old had a forgettable World Cup debut against Spain over the summer as his blunder contributed to Mikel Merino scoring a late winner for La Roja in the quarter-final.

However, he was terrific against the Azzurri yesterday. Lammens made six saves in the game and came up with two tremendous saves after the break when the score was still 1-0.

Belgian outlet Het Belang van Limburg were undoubtedly impressed by him. The publication gave him an 8/10 rating alongside Godts after producing two ‘magnificent’ stops.

They wrote (page 22): “Produced two magnificent saves after the break. That proved decisive, as the score was still 0–1 at the time. Otherwise, he wasn’t called upon much. Kept a welcome clean sheet following that costly blunder at the World Cup.”

Lammens had a forgettable World Cup experience against Spain. He was called up to replace the injured Thibaut Courtois at short notice and made an error with his handling that proved costly.

Against Italy yesterday, the former Royal Antwerp man was undoubtedly prepared. He was exceptional in his decision-making and showed fine reflexes to ensure that Belgium stayed on top.

With Courtois not in contention for Nations League duty, Lammens has the opportunity to make the position his own and keep his place for the European qualifiers later next year too.

Belgium host France in their next Nations League game before entertaining Turkey. This will be followed by a trip to Les Bleus. Lammens could start in each of those after yesterday’s splendid showing.
