Lyon 2-2 Man United player ratings: Onana blunders again as Amorim faces big call after chaotic draw

Manchester United were held to a thrilling 2-2 draw by Lyon under the lights at the Groupama Stadium in the Europa League on Sunday.

The pre-match buzz was all about the fiery remarks from Andre Onana and Nemanja Matic.

The United shot-stopper turned from talker to meme fodder with a howler that left fans cringing.

His error in decision-making aided Lyon in scoring the opener in the 25th minute.

Leny Yoro scored on the cusp of the half time, injecting a spark of hope into United’s fading dreams.

It looked like United would take a crucial lead into the second leg after Joshua Zirkzee put them ahead, but yet another howler from Onana left the visitors stunned and empty-handed.

Player Ratings

Andre Onana – 1/10

Onana completely misread Thiago Almada’s free-kick, turning himself into a punchline for the home crowd’s amusement.

His tame save late in the game allowed Rayan Cherki to slot home on the rebound.

United may have to change their transfer priorities and sign a new goalkeeper in the summer.

Noussair Mazraoui – 5/10

Mazraoui was far from his usual dependable self, as he was caught out twice with ease. Fortunately, United escaped unscathed.

Harry Maguire – 6/10

The England international still does not look fully fit and was taken off as a precaution for Victor Lindelof later in the game.

Leny Yoro – 7/10

A fantastic finish from the young sensation to get his first goal for United.

Diogo Dalot – 6/10

Dalot teamed up well with Garnacho twice but needs to do more in his favoured right wing-back position.

Patrick Dorgu – 6/10

Dorgu first threaded a perfect pass for Hojlund to break the deadlock, then whipped in a sublime cross from the left for Garnacho. Unsurprisingly, United failed to capitalise on either opportunity.

He was a key part of United’s attacks but was a liability at the back.

Casemiro – 7/10

The Brazilian showed off his flair with an acrobatic effort, but it was directed straight at the goalkeeper.

It was another steady performance from the seasoned campaigner.

Manuel Ugarte – 5/10

The midfielder earned an assist for United’s equaliser. He picked up a booking for a tactical foul but should have done a lot better.

Bruno Fernandes – 8/10

Fernandes came close to scoring in the first half, but his goal-bound effort was deflected wide for a corner.

He rose to the occasion again, delivering a fantastic ball to Joshua Zirkzee for his late strike.

Alejandro Garnacho – 6/10

Garnacho created a chance for Fernandes with a clever pullback and saw his effort tipped over the bar by the Lyon goalkeeper.

However, the urgency that normally drives his play was noticeably absent.

Rasmus Hojlund – 1/10

The Denmark international squandered a golden chance laid on a plate by Dorgu, scuffing his shot miserably.

He was second-best in nearly every duel and must be sold in the summer.

Substitutions

Joshua Zirkzee – 7/10

Zirkzee offered more than Hojlund and scored a fine goal under pressure.

Mason Mount – 5/10

The former Chelsea ace added more minutes to his tally but made little impact in the final third.

Kobbie Mainoo – NA

Too late to rate.

Victor Lindelof – NA

Too late to rate.
