Louis Van Gaal made a mistake by allowing Nani to return to Sporting Lisbon on loan, according to a former director of the Portuguese club.
Paulo De Alvandro, a former director of the Lisbon club, has claimed that Nani is one of the best players to have arrived at Sporting over the last couple of years and that United made a mistake by allowing him to leave Old Trafford in the summer, particularly as the Portuguese international had appeared regularly throughout pre-season.
“The Sporting reinforced with the leading figure in the league: Nani is the great enhancement of Portuguese football, we have no player to compete at this level since Nani has arrived,” De Alvandro told Portuguese newspaper A Bola.
“It is inevitable that Manchester United will want the player back at the end of the season, Van Gaal will be sorry to not have gambled on him sooner.”
Nani endured a torrid season under David Moyes but since returning to his former club he has rediscovered a rich vein of form, scoring five goals and assisting a further four in 13 appearances in all competitions.
De Alvandro added that Nani’s performances might even convince United to bring him back in January, though Van Gaal is likely to have other area to focus on, given the injury crisis that has hit United’s defence.
