Van Gaal targets silverware this season

Manchester-United-v-Norwich-City-Premier-LeagueManchester United are still capable to win a trophy this season and lifting some silverware could serve as a springboard for them, according to Louis Van Gaal.

United have not lifted a trophy since winning the Premier League in the 2012-13 season and have already been knocked out of the Champions League and the Capital One Cup this season, but Van Gaal believes the FA Cup and the Premier League are still on his side’s radar.

“It’s always very important for a lot of reasons why you have to win trophies,” he said.

“Then the fans are happy, sponsors are happy, they are coming to the stadium with a lot of confidence and also, for the continuity of the club, it’s very important.

“That’s why United have contracted me, because they have the belief that I shall give them a prize at the end of my contract. Maybe in my second year it’s still possible.”

The Dutchman was also eager to dismiss rumours that he felt under pressure because of United’s interest in Pep Guardiola, who reiterated he will move to a Premier League club next season.

“I’m at the end of my career, so for me it’s not so interesting,” said Van Gaal.

“For me it’s interesting how I take care of Manchester United, and after this season I still have one year to go.”
