Louis Van Gaal has hailed Wayne Rooney as an “example” after the Manchester United captain scored against Everton on Sunday.
It was Rooney’s first goal on his former home turf since 2007 and it was the first time the United number 10 had scored away from home in the Premier League in 11 months.
“He [Rooney] is an example for everybody: his fellow players, players from other clubs and also for the manager,” Van Gaal said of Rooney, whose goal brought his Premier League tally to 187, second only to Alan Shearer.
“He is always running in behind at the right moment.
“That is more important.”
