Louis Van Gaal has yet again come out in defence of Wayne Rooney, claiming the Manchester United captain should not simply be judged on his contribution in front of goal.
Rooney has scored just two Premier League goal this season so far and has come under intense scrutiny for a series of disappointing performances, which have seen fans calling for him to be dropped. Van Gaal, however, insisted the 30-year-old was being unfairly criticised.
“He gives us more than only scoring goals,” Van Gaal said.
“He is our captain but also an example for the whole team. He has more credits than any other player. I have explained that to the group already, one and a half years ago. I still have confidence in Wayne Rooney.”
The United manager added he aimed to address his side’s lack of goals.
“Football is about scoring goals,” he said.
“We have stood first in the Premier League but now we have a had a bad period. We have to improve that – and I hope we can score against CSKA Moscow.”
