Louis Van Gaal has admitted he does not know whether Manchester United will be good enough to progress past the Champions League group stage.
United return to European football’s elite competition for the first time after a season-long hiatus but while they look a stronger side than they did under David Moyes, Van Gaal, who won the tournament with Ajax in 1995 and reached the final with Bayern in 2010, said his side were untested at this level.
“We have to show if we are able to play at this level and that I don’t know. I have to wait and see,” he said.
“I think the fans shall see a Manchester United who fight for their chances and we have to show on the pitch if we are able to win matches on the highest level.
“A draw away is always a good result but I want to win and the first match is very important to win. But it is also for PSV, so you have to wait and see.”
Van Gaal has a poor record in Eindhoven, having tasted defeat with Ajax and Barcelona against PSV.
“For me it is a difficult place. I didn’t win so much here – difficult ground,” he said.
“When I was Barcelona manager I didn’t win here. Neither with Ajax I didn’t win so much. I won here with AZ Alkmaar.”
