LVG: “Derby was the best atmosphere I’ve ever seen”

Manchester-United-v-Manchester-City-Premier-LeagueLouis Van Gaal hailed Manchester United fans for generating one of the best atmospheres he’s ever experienced, adding that the patience they had shown earlier in the season was beginning to be rewarded.

Often criticised for a lack of atmosphere, Old Trafford was at its raucous best on Sunday as United came from behind to beat City 4-2 and cement their grip on a top four finish.

“I was very pleased because the fans are pleased and we are playing for them,” said Van Gaal.

“The fans have not always had a good time because started very bad. But still they were supporting, and now the results are coming back. It’s great to be a supporter of Man United right now.”

The United manager said the atmosphere on Sunday was one of the best he’s ever seen, adding he had fully realised what the derby means to both sets of fans.

“It’s three points! We are four points ahead of fourth in the table and I am very happy for the fans,” he said.

“I have seen what it means for them. They always support us when the results were not good.

“It’s the best atmosphere I have seen here. A fantastic result.”

United endured a torrid start, falling behind after just seven minutes to a Sergio Aguero as City briefly threatened to run riot before they were pegged by Ashley Young’s goal.

Van Gaal admitted that United started nervously and struggled to impose themselves on the game, claiming the equaliser had a crucial influence.

“We started very badly,” he said.

“It was not Manchester United, we were very nervous. I don’t know why. We had no pressure on the ball. I don’t know why. But when we scored the goal, from that moment we had more confidence.

“The second half was much better.”
