The United manager, who guided Ajax to back-to-back finals in 1995 and 1996 – losing the latter – and steered Bayern Munich to the final against Inter Milan in 2010, said his aim was to take United to the final act of the competition this season.

“I hope so. It is realistic,” Van Gaal said.

“Reaching the final is an aim. Winning the final is a little bit of luck.”

United host Wolfsburg tomorrow as they look to secure their first win the Champions League proper since they beat Olympiakos 3-0 in the return leg of the round of 16 in the 2013-14 edition and Schweinsteiger, who has won the trophy with Bayern in 2013, believes United can go all the way.

“Yes this squad has that strength,” he replied when asked what he made of Van Gaal’s comments.

“Of course we have to win our (next) match – we lost our first match at PSV.

“If we scored a second it would have been a different match”
