Jesse Lingard said he’s determined to prove his worth at Manchester United and would rather stay at Old Trafford than head out on loan.
The 22-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Derby County, where he impressed even though the Rams fell short of promotion.
The England U21’s performances have attracted interest from a number of Championship clubs but the youngster, who was on target at last month’s U21 European Championship, explained he’s hopeful to be given a chance to impress Louis Van Gaal.
“The manager has not said anything to me at the moment regarding my future,” Lingard told Press Association Sport.
“I am looking to stay for the first couple of months and see what it’s like.
“Obviously I would like to stay for the rest of the season, this is my club. This is where I want to stay.”
Van Gaal has included a number of youngsters in the squad that has traveled to the US for a pre-season tour and Lingard, who provided the assist for Andreas Pereira’s goal in the 3-1 win over San Jose Earthquakes, has good chances of earning a spot in the first team.
“The manager has been playing me off the right this time, and he said he would like to get two players for each position [this season],” he said.
“The tour has been really good at the moment. I was [on loan] last year so it’s good to be back with all the lads and the backroom staff.”
