Manchester United’s pursuit of Lille’s defender Gabriel Magalhaes may be left feeling the after-effects as Lille were handed Financial Fair Play sanctions.
UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body Investigatory Chamber has ruled that Lille has been in breach of FFP regulations.
They also confirmed that the Ligue 1 club have reached an agreement with a governing body that sees them balance their books over the next four seasons.
Lille have some strict rulings though with the club ordered to not post losses of more than €20m at the end of the 2020-21 financial year and then €10m the year after that.
They must then be fully compliant with rules which insist on losses of no more than €30m over a three-year ‘monitoring’ period.
It gets worse for Lille though, as they have agreed to have up to €9m of earnings from European competition withheld.
They can only name new signings in their squad for European competitions if they record a “net positive transfer balance.” They recently sold Victor Osimhen which meant they have enough cash flow but splashed half of the money to buy Ajax center-back Sven Botman and young promising forward Jonathan David.
With Manchester United looking to sign a new defender to challenge Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof for the starting position next season and increase squad depth, it seems that the Red Devils would be forced to either pay more or look elsewhere.
