‘Likely’: Man Utd in the race to sign Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo this summer

Manchester United remain interested in signing Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo despite his contract extension, reputed journalist Florian Plettenberg claims.

The Ecuadorian was heavily linked with a move away from the Amex Stadium in January. Both Arsenal and Chelsea made bids for him but Brighton were adamant that he was not for sale.

Caicedo recently signed an improved contract until the summer of 2027 but Plettenberg reports that it is still likely that he could leave the Seagulls in the next transfer window.

United are among clubs that are weighing up a summer approach for his services.

Man Utd don’t need another defensive midfielder

Caicedo has been brilliant for the Seagulls this term. He has completed 89 per cent of his passes while winning nearly three tackles and six duels per appearance.

In less than a year since his Premier League debut, Caicedo has already established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders with his consistent performances.

He would be a fantastic acquisition for any elite European club but the big question mark is whether United will consider an approach for him ahead of the summer.

The Red Devils already have a world-class holding midfielder in Casemiro in the ranks and they would not want to spend big on Caicedo to provide cover to the Brazilian.

Instead, the onus should be on pursuing a more creative midfielder. A player in the mould of Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham would be an ideal summer signing.

United will have to break their transfer record to land Bellingham this summer but they face huge competition from Liverpool and Real Madrid in the pursuit.
