Leeds United defender Robin Koch has snubbed Manchester United for a return to Bundesliga this summer, according to Kicker.
The 26-year-old currently has a clause in his contract that allows him to leave on loan following Leeds’ relegation from the top-flight.
United have apparently expressed an interest in signing the centre-back, but it is reported that he has opted to return to Germany.
Koch, who can also play as a defensive midfielder, is now expected to choose between Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen.
Meanwhile, Kicker highlight that Koch has turned down United for a couple of reasons.
First of all, he prefers a leadership role at his new club. There is no guarantee of the same at United, given he is viewed as a back-up.
Koch also believes playing in the Bundesliga would bring him more in the focus of Germany manager Hansi Flick ahead of Euro 2024.
The versatile defender may have played his final game for Leeds, considering he has no plans to renew his contract expiring next summer.
Man Utd looking to reinforce their central defence
The Red Devils are currently looking to add more quality in the central defensive department.
There is a possibility that Harry Maguire could leave on loan or a permanent deal this summer, and it seems manager Erik ten Hag wants someone with a dominating aerial presence.
This could be a reason behind the surprise interest in Koch. The German averaged four clearances per game last season while winning an impressive 62 per cent of his aerial challenges.
With the defender now moving elsewhere, United could consider reviving their interest in signing Monaco’s Axel Disasi. He has already given the green light to move to Old Trafford.
The Ligue 1 outfit are prepared to part ways with him for €40 million.
