Kobbie Mainoo names three Man United stars who backed him during darkest spell of season

Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo has now revealed who helped him during a tough period earlier this season.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Mainoo leaned on Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes and Joshua Zirkzee when former manager Ruben Amorim brutally overlooked him in the first half of the campaign.

The 21-year-old did not start even once in the English top flight under Amorim this season.

Mainoo said: “When you’re not playing many games, or any games, you consider all things.

“But at the forefront of my mind was always to play for Manchester United and continue to play for this club that I’ve grown up at.”

A sensational turnaround from Mainoo

Mainoo has completely transformed his situation since the managerial change at Old Trafford.

The academy graduate has started 14 of the last 15 matches, only missing the clash against Leeds United because of injury.

He also produced two stunning Man of the Match performances against Chelsea and Liverpool.

One of the standout moments of his resurgence came when he scored a sensational match-winning goal against Liverpool.

The young midfielder has also impressed with his composure in tight spaces, regularly escaping pressure with brilliant close control and technical skill.

His resurgence was rewarded last month when he signed a new long-term contract, committing his future to the club until 2031.

Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes are already recognised as leaders inside the dressing room, but it was Joshua Zirkzee who genuinely surprised us the most.

The Dutch forward has also endured a frustrating battle for regular minutes under both Ruben Amorim and Michael Carrick this season.

Despite growing uncertainty surrounding his future at Old Trafford, Zirkzee has continued to impress everyone around Carrington with his professionalism and relentlessly positive attitude in training.
