Manchester United wonderkid Kobbie Mainoo delivered an outstanding performance during the club’s 3-0 Premier League win over Everton on Sunday evening.
The 18-year-old was hugely impressive for the Red Devils in the early part of pre-season, but he unfortunately suffered a freak knee injury against Real Madrid.
As a result, he missed the first few months of the campaign but he has finally got his chance to impress after injuries to Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Mason Mount.
The teenager got the nod over Sofyan Amrabat in the starting line-up against the Toffees and he was exceptional from the number six role on his full league debut.
Mainoo had 57 touches with a passing accuracy of 83 per cent. He was effective in his own box with two interceptions, blocking one key shot on goal and one vital clearance off the line.
The United graduate also won five ground and aerial duels alongside two take-ons. It was an exceptional showing for someone, who has not played any senior football since pre-season.
Mainoo could make the number six role his own
The youngster was one of the bright sparks for United during pre-season. There were suggestions that United may not pursue another midfielder due to his emergence.
However, his knee injury contributed to United securing a loan deal for Amrabat.
The Moroccan was seen as a potential competitor and back-up for Casemiro at the start of the campaign, but he has been inconsistent with his performances to date.
Mainoo had a fantastic display on his first league start and the youngster should be backed to continue in the role when United face Galatasaray in the Champions League.
He was replaced by Amrabat in the 73rd minute at Everton which is a clear indication that manager Erik ten Hag is prepared to start him in the holding midfield position again.
In our view, Mainoo has the potential to make the position his own. With the injury to Casemiro, he has an excellent opportunity to become a mainstay in the United line-up.
