Key Manchester United star missing from provisional squad to face Liverpool

Manchester United could reportedly be without the services of Marcus Rashford ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting against Liverpool at Anfield.

The England international sustained a knock to his back and knee during the midweek FA Cup clash against Wolves and Solskjaer recently admitted that a late fitness test would determine the attacker’s involvement against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

However, it appears that the forward has not recovered from the injury concern and he is apparently not part of the provisional squad which reported at the team hotel ahead of the trip to Merseyside, Manchester Evening News reveals.

Rashford’s recovery was always in doubt due to the short turnover period between the Wolves and Liverpool clash and it is now confirmed that he has not arrived at the Lowry Hotel despite his presence at the Carrington training base earlier on Saturday.

Meanwhile, there is some positive news on the fitness front with Luke Shaw said to be ready after overcoming an illness and possible muscular concern, which has kept him out of action since the New Year’s Day Premier League clash at Arsenal.

Brandon Williams has done a credible job on the left side of the defence in Shaw’s absence and it remains to be seen whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sticks with the United graduate for the testing challenge against Mohamed Salah.

Elsewhere, Daniel James seems the natural replacement for Marcus Rashford on the left side of the attack. The Welshman has not been able to play in his preferred position due to the presence of Rashford. He certainly needs a good performance, having struggled since the turn of the year.
