Manchester United are expected to have a busy summer in the transfer window as we look to overhaul the squad after a shambolic campaign.
We were never in the title race this season, ultimately finishing 32 points behind champions Manchester City, and five points outside of the Champions League places. We were comfortably beaten by Barcelona in that competition too.
Ander Herrera and Antonio Valencia are confirmed to be departing once their contracts expire at the end of June, whilst Juan Mata and Andreas Pereira could also follow. Their are several players we could do with getting rid of as well.
On the flip side, we need to bring in a few players to reignite the squad and boost our chances of a top four finish next season.
One player we have been strongly linked with in recent weeks is Juventus forward Paulo Dybala. The 25-year-old has remained a regular in Max Allegri’s starting lineup, despite the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo to the Allianz Stadium last summer. Dybala has started 22 Serie A games so far this campaign, scoring five goals and assisting four more.
Whether Allegri would want to sell one of his starters certainly comes into question, but according to Italian outlet Calcio Mercato, the 2018-19 Serie A champions would be willing to let the Argentine international leave for a substantial fee this summer. The Italian giants will be asking for a fee just over €100 million – similar to what we paid Juventus when we signed Paul Pogba in 2016.
If we’re to sign any star players this summer it’s likely we’re going to have to pay extortionate fees. Not just because Manchester City and Liverpool have been paying excessive fees in recent windows, but we don’t have Champions League football to offer next season.
Paulo Dybala would be an outstanding signing if we could make it happen, given the goalscoring and creative ability he could add to our side. Whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the ManchesterU United board would be willing to fork out such a price remains to be seen…
