Jurrien Timber: Manchester United target admits he is close to leaving Ajax

Manchester United have been handed a big boost to their hopes of signing Ajax defender Jurrien Timber this summer.

The 21-year-old has told Dutch media outlet De Telegraaf that a move away from the Eredivisie is on the cards at the end of the season.

“A transfer is getting closer and closer, so to speak,” he said. “There is a lot of concrete interest and I have made agreements with Ajax.

“Last year, Ajax asked me to stay for at least one more season and to extend my contract. As a club boy, I did that with love, but after this season we will review the situation.

“When I’m with the Dutch national team, I often talk to guys who play football abroad.

“I want to take that step someday. But when that is, you will find out eventually and it will happen in consultation with Ajax.

“I’m still here and I’m in no hurry. The focus is now on the cup final and the remainder of the season.”

Jurrien Timber would be a game-changer for United

Erik ten Hag was eager to land Timber last summer but was forced to look elsewhere after he agreed to stay with Ajax.

The news that he is poised to leave the Dutch giants will be music to Ten Hag’s ears.

United are keen to strengthen their defensive options to provide more competition for Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.

Timber’s versatility also allows him to play at right-back, which would help Ten Hag kill two birds with one stone.

His impressive performance against Erling Braut Haaland during the 2021/22 Champions League campaign perfectly highlighted his defensive ability.

Timber is comfortable on the ball and anticipates danger quickly, making him the ideal fit for Ten Hag’s system at United.

Signing him this summer is a no-brainer.
