Journalist reveals what’s stopping Manchester United from signing Thiago – and no, it is not Liverpool

Transfer season is in full swing but not much is happening in Manchester United’s camp. The Red Devils seem to have acquired an extremely cautious approach in their dealings. United’s interest in Bayern Munich’s midfielder Thiago is well known and it seems like they’re continuing to explore the possibility of acquiring him.

The Spaniard expressed his desire to leave the club after the completion of the domestic season in Germany in July. And since then he is heavily linked with United bitter rivals Liverpool.

United are keeping tabs on Liverpool’s progress with the 29-year-old. However, Liverpool still haven’t submitted an official bid for Thiago as they are reluctant to meet Bayern’s asking price. Reports suggest that Liverpool are waiting for Barcelona to make a move for Gini Wijnaldum before agreeing on a fee set by the European Champions.

Seeing the opportunity, as no agreement has been reached between any parties, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reached out to Thiago amidst United’s interest in him.

It’s not known what Solskjaer told the Spanish international. Norwegian journalist Jan Aage Fjortoft revealed the news in a very brief tweet. He also said that Thiago’s wage demands are too high and that is probably the main hurdle for the Red Devils.

Adding a player of Thiago’s calibre and experience would certainly give United an edge in the midfield. But United have announced the arrival of Donny van de Beek yesterday and that means now they’re well covered in the midfield department unless someone leaves.

It won’t be surprising if United stop pursuing Thiago now and move on to search for players to strengthen other positions, given the financial difficulties clubs are facing due to the coronavirus pandemic.
