Joshua Zirkzee in ‘disbelief’ after being ‘suddenly sidelined’ by Ruben Amorim, wants January exit

Manchester United have had a decent start to the Premier League campaign with 10 points from seven matches.

The Red Devils have been inconsistent in the early part of the season, but they have been in good form at Old Trafford with three consecutive league wins.

Benjamin Sesko has scored in back-to-back games for the Mancunian giants, and he has started to prove his credentials after a slow beginning to his career.

While Sesko has started to hit his stride, Joshua Zirkzee has cut a frustrated figure on the bench, having not made a single start during the ongoing season.

Voetbal International now claim that the Dutchman is in ‘disbelief’ after being ‘suddenly sidelined’ by manager Ruben Amorim from the starting line-up.

With the World Cup coming up next summer, the Netherlands international needs regular playing time to boost his prospects of making the squad for the global tournament.

Zirkzee, described as ‘powerful‘ by Bayern Munich II manager Holger Seitz, is considering a January move away, and he is ready to ‘seize’ the right opportunity.

Zirkzee could be loaned out by United in January

The 24-year-old joined the Red Devils after a good season with Bologna. He registered 12 goals and seven assists during the 2024/25 campaign, helping them win the Coppa Italia title.

Zirkzee made the perfect start at United with a winning goal coming off the bench in his Premier League debut against Fulham. He has since netted two goals from his next 34 league outings.

The Bayern Munich graduate was signed as a centre-forward, but Amorim played him as a no.10 during the final weeks of last season. He has gone completely out of favour this term.

With the summer arrivals of Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, Zirkzee is regarded as nothing more than a substitute. His situation appears unlikely to improve anytime soon.

Kobbie Mainoo is already looking for a way out in January amid his lack of minutes. Napoli are keen on landing his signature, while Newcastle United and Aston Villa are mentioned as suitors too.

While Mainoo may not be permitted to leave without a marquee midfield signing, there is scope for Zirkzee to be loaned out, given his lack of minutes during the ongoing campaign.

Even when Sesko has been benched this term, Amorim has gone with Cunha to lead the line. Unless the duo are out rested or injured, Zirkzee may not break into the manager’s starting plans.

Zirkzee’s exit could be a blessing in disguise for Chido Obi. The 17-year-old made his senior debut at the back end of last season. He could feature as a regular substitute if the Dutchman departs.

Gabriele Biancheri is another young marksman waiting in the wings for his breakthrough. The Welshman has yet to feature for the senior team and could be given some opportunities by Amorim.
