Jose confirms starter for Derby FA Cup tie

Manchester United host Derby County in the third round of this season’s FA Cup at Old Trafford on Friday night.

After a busy Christmas period that included two games in three days with the latter of those only being played on Monday this week, Jose Mourinho could make a number of rotations to his first team against the Championship opposition.

Speaking to the media ahead of the game, Jose Mourinho was able to confirm one starter for tomorrow’s game.

David de Gea will be handed a break in our first game in this season’s FA Cup as Sergio Romero has been named as the starting goalkeeper.  The Argentine has been our first choice in the EFL Cup this year and also played our final two Champions League group stage matches.

Mourinho confirmed to MUTV:

“I’m going to play [Sergio] Romero because Romero is a top, top goalkeeper and he deserves to play. David deserves a rest.

“And Romero’s going to be the Argentina goalkeeper in the World Cup in a few months, so for all what Romero means to us, Romero plays and I am going to play what I consider to be a very strong team.”

The boss was also able to confirm that both Romelu Lukaku and Marouane Fellaini are fit to face Derby County.

We will be without Antonio Valencia, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Michael Carrick through injury, and Ashley Young is suspended.

Derby County are currently second in the Championship despite only winning one of their last three, which includes a 0-0 draw at lowly Hull City and being held 1-1 at home by out-of-form Sheffield United on New Year’s Day.
