Manchester United under-21 star Joe Hugill has penned a new deal with the club, keeping him tied to the Old Trafford giants until 2026.
United have also inserted an option to extend his contract by a further year, with the youngster poised for a loan move to League One strugglers Burton Albion.
The 20-year-old has established himself as a familiar face in United’s first-team training and has earned a place in Erik ten Hag’s matchday squad four times.
He also made the bench in United’s most recent FA Cup third-round victory over Wigan Athletic, although he is yet to make his competitive debut for Ten Hag’s side.
Hugill has been in prolific form for United’s youth team this season, bagging eight goals in 12 games across the Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy.
He joined United from Sunderland in 2020 and has been a true marksman for the youth sides, netting 18 goals in 24 games for the U18s and 31 times in 57 appearances for the U21s.
It’s only a matter of time before the English man is handed a chance to prove his mettle in the first team, but will first head out on a loan stint with Burton for the remainder of the season.
Having been rewarded for his exceptional development with a new deal, Hugill will be tasked with helping a struggling Burton in the English third tier.
Burton have one of the worst attacking records in League One this season, and a prolific goalscorer like Hugill could help the club push for a place in the top half of the table.
Hugill is not the only United youngster poised to exit Old Trafford on a temporary deal this month, with Hannibal Mejbri closing in on a move to La Liga club Sevilla.
