Jamie Carragher predicts where he thinks Manchester United will now finish following Ruben Amorim’s appointment

Heading into the 2024-25 Premier League campaign, Jamie Carragher predicted Manchester United to finish fifth at the end of the season, but he has now changed his mind.

The Red Devils are currently 12th in the table after 12 games, with six points separating them from the top-four.

Man United head coach Ruben Amorim will be desperate to lead his side to the Champions League next season, but Carragher does not see that happening, tipping the Old Trafford club to finish outside the top-six.

“In fifth place, this is the biggest mistake I’ve made in my predictions,” the pundit said on Sky Sports.

“I put Manchester United in fifth position. I don’t think there is a chance Manchester United finish in fifth position. I would be very surprised if they finish in the top-six. I can’t see that happening.”

The teams currently in the top-four are better than Man United right now and will likely finish ahead of them in the final standings at the end of the campaign.

However, a top-six finish is possible for the Red Devils if Amorim can get his men firing on all cylinders.

The 3-2 victory over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League last night was encouraging and a pointer of things to come under the Portuguese, but there is still plenty of work to be done and getting this current crop of players to deliver the needed results could be tricky.

A mini squad overhaul is needed if Man United are to start challenging for major silverware again, and the next two transfer windows are not likely to be enough for Amorim to fix things.

They finished eighth last term after a third-place finish in 2022-23, and while their new boss has not had enough time to get his style of play across to the players, finishing in the top-six is very much feasible this term, and the Portuguese will hope things can work out on the pitch between now and the end of the season.
