Jadon Sancho slammed by German media for ‘poor’ display in Dortmund defeat

Manchester United loanee Jadon Sancho has been criticised by the German media for his ‘poor’ performance during Borussia Dortmund’s recent defeat to Hoffenheim.

The match marked the 23-year-old’s sixth Bundesliga appearance in Dortmund colours since returning on a six-month loan deal in January.

Sancho was named in the starting line-up but failed to make any meaningful contribution. He had 60 touches during the 75 minutes he was on the pitch, winning five out of six ground duels.

He also completed four out of five dribbles, managed an 88 percent pass success rate and produced three key passes.

Despite showing signs of improvement, the German media had a different opinion, claiming the Dortmund supporters were unhappy with his performance.

“Before moving to Manchester United in 2021, the winger was known for his nimble movements and goal threat,” Derwesten wrote. “Every opponent was afraid when Sancho sprinted towards the goal.

“The fans also hoped that Sancho would continue his performances from his first BVB spell. But the supporters are bitterly disappointed.

“Sancho hardly goes into one-on-one situations, can hardly put himself in the spotlight and mostly just runs around on the pitch.”

After completing his fairytale return to Dortmund, Sancho delivered two assists in his first two games but has failed to build on his strong reintroduction to German football.

Even though his future at United is effectively dead in the water, the review from the German media doesn’t bode well for United’s chances of recouping a significant fee from a potential permanent exit next summer.

Unless there’s a significant turnaround, Dortmund wouldn’t consider taking Sancho back permanently, leaving the Saudi Pro League as the only viable solution for both United and the player.

United are planning a major squad overhaul next summer, and Sancho is firmly on the chopping block after severely damaging his relationship with manager Erik ten Hag.
