Is David de Gea out of form or is this the beginning of his end?

The debate surrounding David De Gea has been going for quite a while now. Some say the Spanish Goalie once referred to as ” The Flying Hero of the Stretford End” is finished while some might argue, whether based on emotional sentiments or logical ones, that he has still got one last spark left in him, one last comeback. Today, we would like to present an explanation for David’s below sub-par performances with both of those sentiments.

Some people say the Spaniard came off cursed from the World Cup, some deny it some believe it, but no one can deny the fact that it all started from 15 June 2018 on the biggest stage of world football against Cristiano Ronaldo and it has still been going on to this day. Safe to say that De Gea who was pulling out performances which were bigger even by his standards with a back 4 not any greater than the ones ahead of Manuel Neuer or his german counterpart at Marc Ter Stegen had the most secure job in the world, well it doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.

Discussions have already been held amongst swarms and groups of Man United supporters, claiming that David De Gea is finished and that they should call back their young English prodigy Dean Henderson who has been a part of the United Academy for more than 4 years and has had a stellar breakout season in the Premier League at loan with Sheffield United. While there is this growing concern regarding the Spaniard’s future, there remain to be a large and faithful group of United supporters who don’t seem to be as reactionary per se, to dismiss David De Gea who along with Wayne Rooney carried the club for 4 years after the departure of their great gaffer.

But it would be harsh to dismiss the claims of the other section of Man United fans because even though their views towards David, the entire club and team continue to be changing frequently in nature.. one cant deny the fact that there have been more than almost 18 errors that De Gea has made which has cost Man United 18 goals over the past two years and it is a fact that he has been conceding more goals than he should be letting in.

Analyzing David De Gea

He has been tremendous for Manchester United there’s no doubt about that, He has stuck it through the most difficult period of modern-day United history. Its been up and down basically for him, four out of five years he has been the Player Of the Year. That tells its own story about the performances for the club.

It’s easy to just blame David for the up and down performance of the club but for once let’s look at it from a wider perspective.

The way the team is playing now, as opposed to when a team plays more defensively, the type of chances that David concedes fit into his best skills. The kind of saves we have seen from him over the years have come from chances created by being defensive. At the moment, Manchester United are playing proper attacking football and that leaves strikers man to man. It becomes like a counter-attack. These are the kind of goals United are conceding right now and David needs a little bit of time to adjust the way Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has set up his team to play.

David De Gea has been a goalkeeper that has been busy for three-four years, and now that he doesn’t have to stay on his toes the whole time, he has to change his game a little bit. He needs to find new ways of keeping his concentration, of staying with the game. Everyone has to adjust and that’s the same for him as well.

David is Manchester United’s No1, he is 29 and he could still go on to play past 35 if he’s protected properly like Edwin Van Der was protected and had a very good career. This poll run by Andy Mitten of The Athletic attests our point and United fans still have faith in him.

Manchester United fans should back him and support him because the ones being critics of the Spaniard know what they have and they know what they have is really good, and let’s be honest David De Gea has been so good that he along with Wayne Rooney kept the club afloat with a defensive partnership in front of him that couldn’t even match the partnerships of the other traditional top 6, let alone the mid-table teams. If those players were still given a chance, then Manchester United fans really need to reflect on themselves a bit and think about giving their star goalie a chance, a chance which he well and truly deserves because he stayed at Old Trafford when nobody wanted to stay and nobody wanted to turn up, and not only that, he did a real fine job in keeping the team relevant all these years.
