Inter not making it easy for Man Utd to sign Perisic

Italian giants Internazionale are preparing to offer Ivan Perisic a new contract at the San Siro after Manchester United failed to sign the Croatian international over the summer.

The 28-year-old was one of our targets during this summer’s transfer window according to widespread reports, but we failed to agree a transfer fee with his owners.

Inter were reportedly asking for £48 million for the left forward whilst Jose Mourinho was not prepared to match their asking price, according the Sun.

Now Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport (via the Mirror) are reporting that Inter’s new contract offer is set to include a release clause that excludes overseas clubs.

The report claims that Perisic will earn a cool €4.5 million (£4.1m) per year in Milan that will keep him at the club until 2022.  Gazzetta doesn’t report the figure of the release clause for domestic clubs.

Ivan Perisic is an excellent forward who makes intelligent runs and gets in good goalscoring positions.  Last season he scored 11 goals and recorded eight assists in 36 Serie A appearances (31 starts) from out wide for a side that didn’t qualify for Europe.  He’s also made an excellent start to the new campaign with one goal and three assists in Inter’s first two games; a 3-0 thrashing of Fiorentina and a 3-1 win at Roma before the international break.

However, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have made an excellent start to our 2017-18 campaign.  The former has one goal and one assist in 178 minutes of Premier League action this season and Martial has two goals and one assist in 102 minutes.

I can understand why Jose Mourinho doesn’t want to fork out a substantial fee for Perisic.  Firstly, he’s 28.  And the two players that currently play his position are 19 and 21 with great potential.  However, the Croatian is equally adept in the number 10 role where only Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been used in our opening three games.  But even then we have Juan Mata and Paul Pogba capable of backing up the Armenian.

Should Gazzetta‘s report be accurate and Perisic goes onto sign this new deal I think our chances of landing him will be very slim, particularly as he turns 29 in February, just after the next transfer window.  By that time Mourinho may have moved on with Rashford and Martial impressing him sufficiently.
