Inter Milan plot January move for Man United striker Anthony Martial

Inter Milan are on the hunt for a new striker, and Manchester United misfit Anthony Martial is among a plethora of candidates under consideration by the Serie A giants.

Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that the Nerazzurri are plotting a January move for Martial, who has notched just a goal and an assist in 13 Premier League outings this season.

Martial has endured a turbulent nine-year spell at Old Trafford – a career plagued by injuries and inconsistency – and United are ready to put him out of his misery at the end of the season.

The once-dazzling Frenchman is contracted to the Red Devils until the end of the current season, but the club could activate a clause that allows them to retain his services until 2025.

However, United have decided against triggering the clause, leaving Martial free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with whatever club of his choosing from the start of the January market.

Despite his contract situation, Inter are reluctant to wait until next summer to secure his services, with the Italian giants eager to reinforce their attacking department in January.

While Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram have delivered the goods for Inter, backup options Alexis Sanchez and Marko Arnautovic have struggled to impress when handed the chance.

Martial’s versatility appeals to the Champions League finalists, with the France international capable of featuring on the flank or as a centre-forward.

The urgency from Inter works in United’s favour, as they’ll be able to recoup a transfer fee for the soon-to-be free agent rather than losing him on a free transfer.

His January exit could leave Erik ten Hag light on attacking options, particularly as the club has closed the door on potentially utilising the winter transfer market to reinforce a massively underperforming squad.
