Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has heaped praise on the performance of midfielder Fred during the club’s 2-0 Premier League defeat at Liverpool on Sunday evening.
The Red Devils struggled to make the most of their scoring chances at Anfield and Andreas Pereira and Anthony Martial squandered a couple of excellent opportunities in the box to find the net.
Ultimately, this contributed to a disappointing defeat to the Reds on Merseyside but there were a few standout performers including Fred, who impressed with his attacking and defensive play on the day.
Fred has slowly become a favourite for a section of the United fans and he had probably his best display in the the club’s shirt against Jurgen Klopp’s side as he showed his dominance in the centre of the park.
The 26-year-old managed to win three tackles and make four interceptions in the defensive scheme of things but he was likewise impressive in the attack with two key passes, three take-ons and three successful longballs, as per whoscored.
Besides this, the Brazilian was constantly on the move throughout the 90 minutes where he displayed a high workrate and his performance has been lauded by Solskjaer in the press conference following the game.
“He’s a top, top performer. All the supporters can see now why we believe in him. He covers every blade of grass on the pitch and wins challenges. Of course he is more confident on the ball. I’m very pleased with Fred,” he was quoted as saying by the club’s official website.
Manchester United missed the opportunity to close the five-point gap to fourth-placed Chelsea on the table after the defeat to the Premier League leaders. They will be aiming to return to winning ways when they host Burnley at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
