‘I’m happy he didn’t come’ – Rio Ferdinand slams summer transfer target

Manchester United legend-turned-pundit Rio Ferdinand has said that he is pleased that Paulo Dybala did not make the move to Old Trafford from Juventus during the recently-concluded transfer window. The Red Devils were in regular talks to sign the Argentine during the final days of the transfer window, but a deal did not materialise after there were doubts regarding the 25-year-old’s desire to join the club, as per BBC Sport. Since then, United have made a stunning start to the Premier League season with a comfortable 4-0 win over Chelsea at home and new signings Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire and Daniel James were all able to leave their mark on the game. While Dybala would surely have bolstered the United’s attack with his creativity and strong technical ability, Ferdinand seems right with the fact that the Argentine is better off with the Bianconeri, given he had little to no ambition of making the move. “A lot of players have declined coming to Man Utd in recent years. They’ve chosen somewhere else. But I don’t know how Dybala had the audacity to turn them down when he’s on the bench at Juventus. He needs to start playing some football,” he told The Star. “Maybe he’s thinking: ‘I want to be Champions League or I’ll sit on the bench. I’d rather do that than play at Man Utd.’ Well, I’m happy he didn’t come, then because you haven’t got the right minerals that I want in a Man Utd player!” A section of the United fans were undoubtedly frustrated with the limited transfer business during the summer and the lack of a midfield signing has been highlighted as a potential concern for the ongoing season. Solskjaer, however, seems to have got things right at the moment with three young home-grown players in the form of Wan-Bissaka, James and Maguire, who are determined to prove their credentials at the highest level. Manchester United are currently second in the league standings behind cross-town rivals Manchester City on goal difference. They are scheduled to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on the road in their next encounter on August 19.
