As the 2022/23 Premier League season draws to a close, the first question Man Utd fans are going to have on their lips is what will the upcoming season bring? Although the previous season saw the team land in the top 5, there’s always the chance of them securing the Premier League title once more. However, they’re going to need to improve their squad to achieve it!
Here we will dive into how Manchester United would fare following the 2023 summer transfer window.
Diogo Costa
There’s no denying that David De Gea has been a brilliant servant to the team and remains one of the greatest shot-stoppers in the country. However, the Spaniard is pretty poor with the ball at his feet. Unfortunately, this has hindered the way Erik ten Hag can play with Manchester United. Because of this, the Red Devils need to be on the hunt for a new goalkeeper who can play out from the back. Who do we think could be up to the job? FC Porto’s Diogo Costa!
Jeremie Frimpong
The right-back position has been a problem at Manchester United for a considerable period. Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s form has improved significantly. However, he’s still very weak going forward. Thankfully, Ten Hag and co. look to solve this problem by signing Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen. The former Man City starlet has been linked with United for some time. What’s more, Frimpong scored an impressive 9 goals and 11 assists from full-back in the previous season.
Marcus Rashford
We all know how brilliant Marcus Rashford has been for Manchester United. In fact, some fans would argue Rashford had his best-ever season for the club in 2022/23. With over 30 appearances on the pitch and 16 goals to his name, we believe there’s no need for Rashford to go anywhere anytime soon. Raphael Varane & Lisandro Martinez
Harry Maguire looks set to leave Old Trafford this summer. This means the club are going to need another centre-back, especially if they want to compete in four competitions next season. Because it’s not a priority spot, a cheaper, younger option like Axel Disasi seems likely. Although the star can grow into a top centre-half, the pairing of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez will likely be the club’s main duo once again next season.
Luke Shaw
While we appreciate that many Man Utd fans would like to see an upgrade on Luke Shaw, he is a good option for the time being while the club addresses bigger gaps in their team. For example, Diogo Dalot can provide cover at left-back, so there isn’t really a need for signings in this position.
Casemiro
This summer may see Manchester United sign a second defensive midfielder to swap Scott McTomilnay. Who may you wonder this could be? Casemiro tends to be at the forefront for this role. In fact, Casemiro has been excellent when not suspended and certainly keeps his position at the base of the team’s midfield.
Youri Tielemans
If there is one reason why the club’s form dropped off in the 2022/23 Premier League season, it was the long-term injury to Christian Eriksen. The Dane suffered an ankle injury during an FA Cup tie with Reading a few months ago and unfortunately, has not played a game since. Eriksen has been fantastic at linking defence and attack and was imperative to how Ten Hag wants to play. The club’s other options in this field are pretty weak and as Tielemans will be a free agent from summer onwards, the Belgian player seems an obvious choice to rotate or replace Christian Eriksen.
Kaoru Mitoma
It’s safe to say Manchester United have spent a fortune on right-wingers in the last couple of years. In fact, the figure has gone into the hundreds of millions! However, neither Jadon Sancho nor Antony have been good enough. The latter in particular showed promise by scoring three in his first three outings but has fallen off significantly since. The club have been linked with Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma recently. While he’s a left-winger by trade, Mitoma can play on the right and would likely do a better job than the club’s current options.
Harry Kane
Center-forward is the club’s weakest spot heading into the summer. And given how much of a mess Tottenham are at the minute, it would make more sense for Manchester United to bring in Harry Kane. The Englishman has been heavily associated with the club and Ten Hag is believed to prefer Kane to the other striker touted for a United move – Victor Osimhen.
While we have a little while to wait until the 2023/24 Premier League season kicks off, now is the perfect time to analyze Manchester United’s current squad and who could come into the team to potentially bring them to victory.
