Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham United at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
The Hammers took the lead through a Michail Antonio penalty on the stroke of half-time.
Mason Greenwood’s fine strike early in the second half earned us a point that moved us into third following Chelsea’s 5-3 defeat at Liverpool later than evening.
It means a draw away to Leicester City on Sunday would guarantee Champions League football next season and a win would secure third spot.
Speaking after the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was full of praise for Greenwood, telling MUTV that he expects the 18-year-old to score more goals this season, particularly if we progress in the Europa League. The boss said:
“There’ll be more games for him. He’ll score more and hopefully we’ll have five more games and I’m sure that if he plays five games he’ll score more. You expect it from him, when he’s in and around the box you expect him to hit the target. One was blocked today by the defender, Ogbonna, and the other one he scored with, so we just have to keep teeing him up and giving him opportunities.“
Ole then joked about Mason Greenwood playing computer games into the early hours of the morning before training, but finished by complementing his finishing:
”With Mason, you know when he’s had a good sleep or he’s stayed up late [before training] playing on the PlayStation [laughs] as then he may not hit the ball as cleanly! What he did today, he’s done it time and time again. Every time he finishes, you can see he’s an exceptional finisher. It’s no surprise when he hits the back of the net as he’s that good a finisher.”
Mason Greenwood has scored 10 goals in 30 Premier League appearances (11 starts) for us this season, predominately playing down the right wing.
The teenager also has a very impressive five goals in seven Europa League matches (5 starts) this campaign. We continue our tournament next month, starting with the second leg of our Round of 16 tie versus LASK.
