Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has heaped praise on the performance of Brandon Williams following the club’s goalless draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup third round.
The 19-year-old left-back had a challenge on his hands with an in-form Adama Traore coming up against him and he produced a decent-to-good display as the attacker was restricted to zero shots on target.
Meanwhile, Williams did not have many opportunities to attack in the Wolves half but he should have got a penalty after an apparent foul in the box by Leander Dendoncker.
Speaking after the game, Solskjaer was pleased with the overall showing of the teenager, who has been competing with Luke Shaw for a role on the left side of the backline.
“He’s not giving me headaches, he’s giving me a nice decision to make. Brandon plays against one of the quickest, strongest wingers in the Premier League, the one with the most dribbles in the league, and he did fantastic. He’s just improving day by day,” he told BT Sport via Metro.
A number of United fans have called for Williams to be promoted as the first-choice left-back and the youngster is certainly showing progress and putting the pressure on Shaw.
Shaw had a tough league outing against Arsenal on New Year’s Day and it will be interesting to see whether Williams or Ashley Young get the nod over him for the Manchester derby on Tuesday night.
United are expected to host the first leg of the League Cup semi-final against Manchester City at Old Trafford and Solskjaer will be hoping that his side can replicate the performance from the 2-1 win at the Etihad earlier this term.
