Manchester United target Saul Niguez has Tweeted today that he will make an announcement about his ‘new club’ in three days.
The Atletico Madrid midfielder has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for a while now.
Spanish outlet Todo Fichajas reported three weeks ago that we had agreed an €80 million (£70m) deal with Diego Simeone’s side for the player. That fee is certainly affordable for us and we’ve never been afraid to splash the cash.
Saul came through the youth ranks at Atletico Madrid and has been a regular in their first team following a season-long loan at Rayo Vallecano in 2013-14.
The 25-year-old is a central midfielder who is good at build-up play and covers a lot of ground. He gets stuck into challenges to win the ball back for his side.
This is the type of midfielder I would expect Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to attempt to sign this summer. Saul would be ideal for getting the ball to Bruno Fernandes’ feet for the Portuguese star to setup and score goals for our side.
We’re a bit weak in the middle of the park particularly with Paul Pogba’s lack of effort and with Nemanja Matic in decline. Fred improved before the Premier League’s suspension in mid-March but the Brazilian is still somewhat short of turning us into title contenders.
No other club has been as strongly linked with the signing of Saul as Manchester United and I am starting to believe that it will be our name on the Spaniard’s Twitter account this Wednesday when he promises to make an announcement.
We shall have to wait up to 72 hours to see if we have been successful or not. In the meantime, Spanish clubs are back in training on Monday so it will be interesting to see if Saul shows up to Diego Simeone’s sessions or not. Any transfer would not officially go through until 1 July anyway.
