Manchester United captain Harry Maguire may have played his final game of the Premier League campaign following the confirmation of a knee injury, Daily Mail reports.
The centre-back has endured a tough season with the Red Devils, and he has been the subject of constant criticism from some fans for his unforced and positional errors.
Maguire was left out of the bench for last weekend’s 3-1 league defeat at Arsenal. Ahead of tonight’s game against Chelsea, Ralf Rangnick confirmed that he has a knee injury.
The £36 million-rated star has not been training for the past few days, and it is now reported that he may not recover in time for the final three games of the campaign.
Our view:
Maguire has had a season to forget with the Red Devils and it has been suggested that the club are already looking for a potential new partner for Raphael Varane.
United recently failed in their pursuit of free-agent Antonio Rudiger. Their move for the Germany international leads to questions over Maguire’s future at the club.
The hierarchy may not necessarily look to offload him, but it appears likely that he could be stripped of the captain’s armband before the start of the 2022/23 season.
In his press conference yesterday, Rangnick did not necessarily recommend Maguire for the role next term, adding that the new leader should be elected by the team.
Rangnick could go with a back three tonight. With Maguire out, Phil Jones seems likely to get the nod over Eric Bailly to partner Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof.
