Harry Maguire delivers solid performance vs Liverpool

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire delivered a solid performance during the 2-2 Premier League draw against Liverpool on Sunday.

The Red Devils went into the game with a defensive crisis. They were without four senior centre-backs in Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans.

Maguire was partnered alongside young graduate Willy Kambwala and he managed to produced a quality performance despite Liverpool dominating the opening half.

The Englishman became better defensively as the game went on. He won 100 per cent of his tackles (4/4) and nine duels. The 31-year-old also managed 75 touches with eight clearances.

Maguire had a poor outing against Chelsea in midweek where he won just one duel, but he produced a vastly improved showing in the North West derby at Old Trafford.

The €20 million-rated star has a big role to play for United in the season run-in alongside Kambwala, considering the club could be without their injured centre-backs for a while.

Martinez and Lindelof have been ruled out for at least a month while manager Erik ten Hag has revealed today that Varane and Evans won’t return to action in a short notice.

United’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League are fading at the moment. Fifth could be sufficient to make the competition, but they are currently far behind.

The club are trailing Aston Villa by 11 points with a game in hand. They need a huge turnaround of results to catch up and leapfrog Unai Emery’s side by the end of the season.

United may need to win their final seven league games to have any chance of doing so. The club will face Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium in their next match on Saturday.
