Gullit: “United should have signed Hummels”

908202_heroaFormer AC Milan and Chelsea star Ruud Gullit has claimed he was left surprise by Louis Van Gaal’s decision not to sign Mats Hummels last summer and in the January transfer window.

United have been linked with the Borussia Dortmund defender for over a year but despite the speculation the German international has remained at the Westfalenstadion so far, with United signing Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo last summer.

Gullit admitted that Van Gaal’s reluctance has surprised him, particularly as Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic both left the club at the end of last season, meaning United have had to rely on Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling.

“The only thing for me that is a surprise is Van Gaal didn’t buy any good central defenders – that had to be his priority,” said the former Chelsea boss.

“He was crazy about Hummels and wanted to buy him. So I would have bought Manchester United some good defenders because that was the weakest link.

“For me, that they did not was a surprise. Nevertheless, he gets results. The more results he gets, the more confidence they get and the better they will play.”
