Manchester United are scheduled to host Colchester United in the quarter-final stage of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is most likely to make changes from the recent Premier League clash against Everton due to the frequency of games during the festive period and that could hand opportunities for some of the fringe and young players in the squad.
Formation: 4-2-3-1
Predicted Lineup:
Sergio Romero is likely to return between the sticks. The Argentine has exclusively featured in the Cup competitions this season and he has a strong chance to register his first clean sheet in the competition.
In the backline, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw are likely to be rested. Diogo Dalot and Ashley Young should replace them at right and left-back respectively. Dalot has been sidelined from first-team duties since October but Solskjaer has confirmed that he is available ahead of Wednesday’s Cup tie. In the central defence, Axel Tuanzebe is a definite inclusion and he could be accompanied by Victor Lindelof or Harry Maguire. The former could make the starting lineup, considering Maguire has already been involved in two games in less than a week.
At the heart of the midfield, James Garner should be handed with another Cup start, particularly after his non-involvement for the Under 23s on Monday night. Nemanja Matic seems set to accompany him in the centre of the park. The Serbian is no longer regarded as an automatic choice for the league duties and it won’t be surprising, if he heads through the exit door next month.
In the attack, Tahith Chong will definitely not feature after playing through the entire Under-23 game on Monday. Similarly, Angel Gomes may not make the matchday squad amid the uncertainty surrounding his future. The youngster has less than seven months remaining on his contract and he was recently a surprise absentee against AZ Alkmaar where the likes of Chong and Ethan Laird made the squad.
In this case, we are fancying starts for Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira. Mason Greenwood should definitely lead the attack after contributing three goals in the past two games in all competitions. The 18-year-old has the chance to produce another dominant display to enhance his prospects of regular playing time in the Premier League.
