Greenwood and Mata start, Predicted Man United lineup (4-2-3-1) to face Man City

Manchester United are set to face arch-rivals Manchester City on the road in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final. The Red Devils are currently trailing in the double-legged tie after a 3-1 defeat to the Cityzens at Old Trafford and they need to score two goals more than the hosts in normal time to keep the tie alive through a penalty shoot-out.

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Predicted Lineup:

Sergio Romero has been the regular pick for the goalkeeping role in the Cup competitions. David de Gea should, however, return between the sticks on Wednesday after starting the first leg of the League Cup semi-final earlier in the month.

In the defence, Aaron Wan-Bissaka should return in the right-back spot. Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire will definitely slot into the central defensive roles while Luke Shaw could get the nod over Brandon Willians on the left side of the backline.

Nemanja Matic remains an injury doubt for the derby and his absence could see Andreas Pereira start in the central midfield for the second game on the bounce. The Brazilian should be accompanied by fellow compatriot Fred, who had probably his best-ever performance for United during the first leg. Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay continue to remain on the sidelines with their respective injury concerns.

In the frontline, Mason Greenwood and Daniel James are pretty much automatic choices for the wide attacking positions with Marcus Rashford out injured. In the number 10 role, Juan Mata could get the nod over Jesse Lingard despite the latter’s goal at Tranmere. Lingard was disappointing in the reverse fixture and Solskjaer could go with the experience of Mata, who is capable of providing through balls with precision on his day. Anthony Martial will definitely lead the line.
